Aveda Institute Maryland Continuing Education
Effective January 1, 2026, all Maryland-licensed Cosmetologists, Limited Hairstylists, Limited Blow Dry Stylists, Limited Estheticians, and Limited Nail Technicians must complete the following credits to renew their licenses:
Continuing Education (CE) requirements for licensees include a total of a minimum of 6 hours ONLY, divided between required and elective topics.
Required Topics – 2 hours total ONLY. Must cover Health, Safety, Welfare, Sanitation, and/or Board Laws/Regulations. You only need to complete a total of 2 hours from these required 5 categories.
Elective Topics – 4 hours total ONLY. Electives are courses chosen based on individual interests, as long as they fall within the scope of practice for your license type. Examples of elective topics include Business, the practice of cosmetology, esthetics, and nail techniques, and Product Knowledge.
Licensees are required to complete a minimum 2 hours of required topics and 4 hours of elective topics, for a total of 6 CE hours.

What’s Important to Know
Check Your License Expiration Date:
If your license expires after January 1, 2026, you will need to complete 6 Continuing Education (CE) credits before renewing.
6 CE Credits = 6 Hours
All CE credits must be completed within your license renewal cycle.
Example: If your license is valid from January 26th, 2025, to January 26th, 2027, you must complete all 6 CE credits during that period. After your license is renewed, the CE cycle starts over.
Course Completion & Proof:
After completing each course, you’ll receive a Certificate of Completion. Keep these certificates as proof when submitting your license renewal.

What is the reason for Continuing Education?
This is a new mandate required by the Maryland State Board of Cosmetology, this law was passed to ensure licensees remain up to date and compliant with different practices in the respected fields.
How many Hours of Continuing Education is a Licensee required to take?
Six hours (6 hours) total. With Requirements including:
Required Topics: 2 Hours (Our Virtual Options Qualify)
Choose from the following:
1. Health – 1 to 2 Hours or
2. Safety – 1 to 2 Hours or
3. Welfare – 1 to 2 Hours or
4. Board Laws and Regulations – 1 to 2 Hours
AND
Required Elective Topics: 4 Hours (Our In-Person Options Qualify)
What is the Cancellation Policy?
Virtual CE Course fees are final and non-refundable. In-person course fees may be refunded only if a cancellation is received via email at StudentServices@avedainstitutemd.edu, 72 hours prior to the scheduled class. Cancellations made after this window, as well as no-shows, are non-refundable.
What if I am unable to make it on time?
Aveda Institute Maryland does not permit any late entrances to any Continuing Education (CE) Classes. Classes begin promptly at their start time. Any late entrances will be treated as a no-show and are non-refundable.
Are the Virtual classes recorded?
No, all virtual courses are delivered live by knowledgeable, experienced educators. Pre-recorded sessions are not available.
Are the Courses Approved through Maryland?
Yes, our current Continuing Education Courses listed above are approved by the Maryland Board of Cosmetology and provide CE credits upon completion. Each course offered indicates the number of CE’s awarded to attendees.
