Is A Future In The Beauty Industry Right For You?

Is A FUTURE In The Beauty Industry Right For You?

Beauty is more than doing hair, makeup, skincare, and nails. Beauty is an art form. Instead of using canvas and paints, you use live human beings to bring your vision into reality. Most of our students have a passion for beauty and a burning desire to create something beautiful using tools and products. Do you love doing hair? Is makeup your palette to the world? Or maybe you love skincare and love making people look beautiful. If so, a career in the beauty industry may be your perfect fit!

What Can You Do In The Beauty Industry?

Believe it or not, it is more than standing behind a chair all day. I have heard so many people say “I love doing hair but there is no way I could stand behind that chair all day!” Well, the good news is you don’t have too! There are so many options available in the industry that weren’t available even 10 short years ago! Some pathway choices include:

  • Hairstylist
  • Color Specialist
  • Platform Artist
  • Product Rep
  • Educator
  • Salon Manager
  • Salon Owner
  • Wedding Makeup and Hair
  • Wedding Nails
  • Updo Specialist (for weddings and proms)
  • Traveling Stylist
  • Editorial Hair and Makeup Artist
  • Model Stylist
  • Runway Stylist
  • Skincare Educator
  • Makeup Educator
  • Image Consultant

The list is endless!

Which License Is Best For Me?

There are several licenses you can get in the industry. You just have to decide which one meets your goals, your time frame, and what you really want to do.

Cosmetology License:

Cosmetology licenses trump most other licenses. When you have your cosmetology license you can do it all, makeup, skincare, hair, and nails. This is very appealing to most employers because they can hire a cosmetologist and let them do it all instead of hiring two or three other people. But, getting your cosmetology licenses takes time and passion! It is not a quick process. At Aveda Institute Maryland we have a few options to get your cosmetology license!

  • Daytime Classes- This 10-month program is the quickest way to get your license. You go to school Tuesday-Saturday, 8:45 to 4:30.
  • Night Time Classes- This program is perfect for those that work, have kids, or need a shorter schedule. You go to school Monday through Thursday 5:30 pm to 10:00 pm and Saturday 8:45 am to 4:30 pm. This program is 60 weeks long (roughly 14 months)

A total of 1500 hours must be met before you can graduate and get your license.

Esthetician License

The Esthetician License is for those that want to focus solely on skincare and makeup! It is a much shorter program and when you are finished you will be able to do skin care, makeup, brow waxing, brow tinting, eyelashes, and more! You can also take advanced classes such as microblading and eyelash extensions. We offer daytime classes Tuesday-Saturday 8:45-4:30

You must complete 600 hours before you can graduate and get your license.

Why Aveda?

Choosing a school can be a very personal choice. It is a unique experience that is different for everyone. You may need a school that is close to home, or maybe you want a school that focuses on a certain brand. Whatever your reasoning is, you need to explore all of your options. In fact, that may be what lead you to this article. So why Aveda?

Aveda is one of the leading industry companies that is paving the way to natural beauty products. They are made from pure, natural, organic and responsibly sourced ingredients. Aveda is also a global pioneer in sustainable business practices, such as manufacturing with 100% wind power, and using recycled materials and soy ink for packaging and printing. Last but certainly not least, Aveda fundraises through special product sales and Earth Month initiatives that raise millions annually for clean water. Honestly, I think our mission says it all!

Our mission at Aveda is to care for the world we live in, from the products we make to the ways in which we give back to society. At Aveda, we strive to set an example for environmental leadership and responsibility, not just in the world of beauty, but around the world.

In school, we are taught the Aveda difference, such as rituals, comforting tea, and all of our students are taught how to work in a salon while working on clients. Aveda takes beauty school to a higher level. Aveda is not just found in salons, though. As an Aveda graduate, you could find yourself in many other fields. The possibilities are endless when you graduate from Aveda.

I Am Ready To Learn More!

Regardless of what school you choose, there are things you need to do when taking a tour of the campus!

  1.  Ask questions, a lot of questions. Don’t be afraid to talk to your admissions counselor. Make sure the program is right for you and your needs!
  2. Talk to other students that are in the program. Ask them how they like the school, what their schedules are like, or any other information you would like to know. Current students have the inside scoop on the school and can help you decide if it is right for you!
  3. Ask about financial aid. It is there for those who qualify.

Do not schedule a tour during lunch. Make sure the students are there so you can see the place in action. While touring watch to see if the students are busy, if they are learning, how many teachers are there, is there one-on-one attention, and most importantly, is the salon clinic floor busy? Those questions are very important and should be answered through your tour!

  2. It makes a lot of sense to always ask a lot of questions when you are going through school. My sister is trying to get into cosmetology school so that she can pursue her dream. She needs to read your article to make sure this is the career path that she wants to follow.
